Power tools for shaping and finishing

Post by J1A »

Hi all,

Just thought I'd start a thread so people can post suggestions for tools etc.

I'm about to invest in a bench sander (like this one: https://www.bunnings.com.au/ryobi-370w- ... r_p6210416), and was wondering what other people use?

Happy skating!

Nice! I started off building boards using a Harbor Freight belt and disc sander, and I still use it when I'm building outside of my studio: https://www.harborfreight.com/4-inch-x- ... 97181.html
That sander is a great deal, but it isn't as powerful as most standalone belt sanders (I find the belt takes way too long to sand, and usually only use the disc... but the end of the belt is necessary for any internal radii). So, I recommend it if you're getting started and looking for something low cost that gets the job done, but if you can spend more, have the space, and are planning on using it a lot, I'd recommend something bigger and more powerful so you can be more efficient.
I did a video about the tools I used to get started making boards a few years back: https://youtu.be/NCVbh-4Wi8s
Let us know how that sander works out!
